Smart Monitors Linked to a Server

Hewlett-Packard’s version of a so-called thin client and monitor, top, and the Hot-E device from ThinLinX, above.Rather than a big, loud and complex computer on your desk, if you can have a quiet, thin, little need to upgrade or repair?
This has been a goal of many technology companies over the past 15 years. They are trying to undermine Microsoft’s dominance of the desktop PC to create the number of smart display.
Rather than relying on their internal organs to deal with, the so-called thin client network to send out to a bigger server to accommodate all the necessary software and data processing.
For various reasons, including the slow and cumbersome data connection software, this model can not fulfill their promises, the industry has become a joke. But now the technology is coming back, large companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems and Samsung are increasing their investment in thin-client systems. Many start-up companies are looking for in the market.
Supporters of the thin client has to give up most of the challenges Microsoft - in fact, in most cases, it is easy to use W indows network. However, they continue to bill clients in order to save the company money to make their systems more secure.
“The cycle of propaganda, follow the thin clients at the beginning of this huge level of negative disappear, it is now bubbling back,” said Bob O’Donnell, analyst at consulting firm IDC.

The technology seems clear. Software failure, and update security is much less of a problem. In the thin-client model places the burden of the management of computer professionals to monitor the servers in a large warehouse.

Perhaps the most important thing is that the user’s data storage on the network. If your computer is resting on the table, you and another to connect to the data warehouse, and you can go.

The biggest change from driving interest in thin client software and network improvements. The spread of high-speed Internet connection means that people working in a small bedroom and the family can rely on efficient links to the data warehouse.

Hewlett-Packard, Citrix Systems, Microsoft, have also fine-tuning software controlling communication between the client and server. This led to the smooth running of the machine, or even handle video and audio applications.

Most importantly, a number of thin-client program can be attributed to growth in the use of so-called virtualization software, which allows the company a complete package of all the operating systems and applications. Rather than the selection of some of the software to send the wire, the shipping lines to the “virtual desktop.”

In the revitalization of the white-hot thin-client technology has given rise to address the market for innovative ways.

For example, Teradici, start-up near Vancouver, the production of microprocessors, high-speed mobile software, data storage, in order to thin client. Dell and IBM provided the system on this basis, and the chips that they can handle even the most demanding software, such as design.

Next month, Samsung will launch 19-inch SyncMaster 930ND monitoring, Teradici rely on the chip. Enterprise customers can insert an Ethernet cable to monitor and turned it into a full-fledged computer to connect to their data centers.

Silicon Valley start-up clients Pano Logic plug-in display, keyboard and mouse into a small device, server management and connectivity, a full virtual desktop. Hot-e from Australia’s ThinLinX is similar. A long-term player in the thin client business, Wyse, to create a series of ultra-thin hardware, including notebook computers, to handle the same work.

Noted the increased interest in thin client and virtual desktops, HP has created a new 6-month pre-treatment technology, the thin client for the purchase of Neoware Inc. 214,000,000 U.S. dollars at the end of 2007.

“You see, many of the technical elements of the right have begun there,” Luobotuoma the vice president in charge of HP’s “desktop solution”. “I think 5 years from now you will see a lot of light business computing.”

JetBlue has already acquired 20 percent of the thin client computers to use a combination of HP hardware and Citrix’s software. The technology will be center stage in the new airline terminal at Kennedy Airport.

“Thin client is a strategic direction for us,” said Thompson, eight, technical director of business JetBlue. “They are very customer-oriented behind every piece of technology, you see.”

In January next year, the Denver regional transportation district to deal with public transport in the Denver area, plans to replace about a quarter of the system and the thin client from Wyse running VMware’s virtualization software.

“We are looking to save about $ 30,000 annually in energy costs alone,” Trent only the technical infrastructure manager. “We may be replaced every 7-9 years old, rather than every 3 years with the PC.”

Despite the burgeoning interest in thin client is still a tough price for cultural reasons. People are used to maintain personal and confidential information of their own machines, many companies see from the traditional desktop as a risk. In 2008, only 3,700,000 compared to the thin client shipments, 300 million computers, according to the IDC statistics.

This should begin to change, in 2009 the company began a series of tests, and in 2010, large-scale commitment to this technology began, Mr. O’Donnell said.

Wall Street wants to allow employees more easily and to save money, especially in these times of tension, and promote a number of early tests.

“Financial services company in the United States is very interested in the use of thin client, said:” Scott, director of Windows Business Group at Microsoft.

Microsoft has developed virtualization software, and access to the software manufacturer - Calista K idaro-technology and its products can be added thin-client technology.

Looking to the future, thin-client model can creep into the family, similar to the functions of the PC and TV set-top box or arrive through the TV after inserting equipment. Internet service providers have begun to explore the idea of selling these products to consumers, and then a monthly subscription fee to provide computing services.

Will be beneficial to consumers to buy equipment prices lower than a PC, but can still be full of virtual computers, data storage management.

“There are companies talking about the spin-off an infinite number of virtual systems and rented to consumers,” said Roger Kay, president of a company’s analysis of Endpoint Technology. “This is an idea whose time has come, as well as a growing number of arguments in favor of a day is some kind of operation.”
