Police question alleged teen ringleader of cyber crime network

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A New Zealand teenager who’s suspected of heading up an international cyber crime network has been questioned by police and let go without being charged.

Investigators say the crime ring broke into more than a million computers worldwide, stealing millions of dollars from victims’ bank accounts.

Police raided the home of the 18-year-old suspect yesterday and seized several computers. He’s been released but police say he is still part of the investigation.

Eight people have faced indictments or convictions in connection with the crime ring so far. More than a dozen additional warrants have been served in other nations including the U.S.

The FBI puts combined economic losses from the ring at more than 20 million dollars.

A New Zealand investigator says the teen could face charges that carry a maximum sentence of ten years behind bars.
