Japan and Australia Bank Revive Economies

Limit Short-Selling

In response to the depressed financial markets, regulations, for the second time in less than a week preparing to take steps that could have the effect of temporarily shoring up the prices of shares. Fortis Holding reported a €28 billion 2008 loss

Belgian financial services company Fortis Holding reported a € 28 billion 2008 loss on Tuesday as it asked shareholders to vote next week to a takeover by French bank BNP Paribas. Fortis loss, equivalent to about 37 billion dollars, compared with a profit of 4 billion € in 2007. The vast majority of red ink resulted in loss of € 27.4 billion on sales of rushed banking activities in the Dutch and Belgian governments, as the company teetered on the verge of failure last fall. The company’s Belgian insurance business reported a net profit of € 6 million, after after-tax write-downs on its investment portfolio of € 639 million. Fortis Insurance International broke even in 2007, compared with a profit of € 40 million. Fortis Executive Director, Karel De Boeck, said that association with the BNP recently improved terms Fortis would ensure its viability and that the merged company would carefully consider the best way to employ its capital, including acquisitions. President Obama is facing challenges to American power on many fronts, as is preparing for his first trip abroad since according with nation’s economic woes emboldening adversaries and allies alike.
Despite his immense popularity throughout the world, Mr Obama will face resentment over American-style capitalism and resistance to its economic prescriptions, when he lands in London on Tuesday for Group of 20 summit meeting of industrial and Course forthcoming market nations plus the European Union.
President will not try to overcome the refusal of NATO to provide more troops in Afghanistan, when he goes on later in the weeks to respond with military alliance.
Seems unlikely to return home with no more to show for its attempts to open a dialogue with leaders of Iran, who so far have responded with hard words, though not enough to persuade Russia to support U.S. in tougher sanctions against Tehran. And he will be tested in face-to-face meeting of leaders of China and Russia, have been pondering the extent to which the power of the United States to dominate global business may be ebbing. Tesla Motors Unveiled Thursday its Model S, an all-electric sedan it considers to be the beginning of a generation of fossil fuel-free cars and the company profitable. But before that happens, the company must find money to build the vehicle. Tesla is pinning its hopes inWashington and a $ 450 million government loan. The company expects to hear from the Department of Energy this year. “We are very confident that Tesla will be selected and it will appear this year,” said Elon Musk, chief executive of the company, after listing the car for customers, analysts and reporters in a giant hangar, set up to look like a lounge at SpaceX, Mr. musk of rocket factory. Other venture is to build a spaceship. Tesla, which was founded in 2003, was heralded as a solution to Silicon Valley’s energy problem the nation. If a fight Detroit could not make an electric vehicle, then a Silicon Valley start-up would. Today, Tesla is facing the same plight as many green-energy start-ups. Obama administration and Federal Reserve, still smarting from the political furore over the bailout of American International Group, began a court-press on Tuesday to expand the federal government to seize control of troubled financial institutions deemed too big to fail . In its press conference on Tuesday evening, Obama said the president, the government could be handled by AIG bailout more effective if they had the same power to seize large financial companies, as it did not manage to take over banks. “It is precisely because of the lack of authority, which AIG situation became worse,” Mr. Obama said, estimating that there will be strong support from the American people and Congress to provide that authority. ” Earlier Tuesday, Treasury Secretary, Timothy F. Geithner, offered a proposal that would allow the government to take control, restructure and possibly almost any type of financial institution, which was in trouble and big enough to destabilize broader financial system. Falling crude oil prices becomes all the headlines, but the first global glut of natural gas in history is a driving even more drastic collapse in the cost of gas that cooks food, warm homes and run factories in the United States and other countries. Six giant plants capable of cooling and liquefying gas for export are due to come on line this year just as economies in Asia and European countries that most of the import gas to run their industries are slowing. Energy experts and company executives say that means loads of natural gas in Romania, Egypt, Nigeria and Algeria, which would otherwise be going to Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Spain have started to arrive in supertankers in the United States, even if it is not a gas glut here, too. With industrial and utility use of natural gas dropping, gas prices in the United States have already fallen by two-thirds of the summer. Prices are not likely to go down much more, experts say, but an increase in imports is likely to keep them low to the global economy recovers and drives demand back.

That is good news for American consumers and many businesses, since gas provides about a fifth of the electricity generated by utilities and is a vital component of fertilizers, plastics and other industrial products. But this is bad news for energy independence, which cheered the explosion of domestic gas drilling and production in the last four years. (more…)
